What is AlgaeBase?
AlgaeBase is a database of information on algae that includes terrestrial, marine and freshwater organisms. For convenience, we have included the sea-grasses, even though they are flowering plants.
Copyright and Intellectual Copyright
Copyright and other intellectual property rights worldwide for the data compilation are claimed by AlgaeBase.
Many organisations and people have, funded supported and contributed to AlgaeBase since its small beginnings on 20 March 1996. A full list is here.
We particularly appreciate the support of Dr J.A. West and Dr P.W. Gabrielson.
Programming is currently by Pier Kuipers of Source Code Development, Ltd..

Many people at the National University of Ireland Galway contributed to AlgaeBase. In particular, Ms Eilís Nic Dhonncha in the period 1996-97 and 1999-2005; Dr Fabio Rindi (1999-2006), Dr Robert Wilkes, Mr Andy Taylor, Ms Sandy Lawson, Dr Róisín Nash, and Ms Liz Moran. We are most grateful to all of them.
AlgaeBase is often a compromise of taxonomic opinions that may or may not reflect your particular conclusions. It is also a work in progress, and is thus not entirely complete. Please note that AlgaeBase is purely meant as an aid to taxonomic studies and not a definitive source in its own right. You should always check the information included prior to use.
