The type species (lectotype) of the genus Chara is Chara vulgaris Linnaeus.

Neotype locality: "In Torflöchern auf Wiesen bei Spandau" [Berlin, Germany] (Wood & Imahori 1965: 209). Neotype: A. Braun [Braun, Rabenhorst & Stizenberger, Characeen Eur. 74a]; Ende Juni bis Anfang August; NY Braun, Rabenhorst & Stizenberger, Characeen Eur. 74a (Wood & Imahori 1965: 209). Notes: Originally locality: "hab. in reg. Rhenan" [Rhineland?] (Braun 1835: 68).
