The type species (lectotype) of the genus Chara is Chara vulgaris Linnaeus.

Type locality: "Von dieser neuen Art fand ich nur wenige sporentragende Exemplare in dem Teiche am Galizienberge bei Wien.' [Austria] (Ganterer 1847: 21).
