The type species (lectotype) of the genus Chara is Chara vulgaris Linnaeus.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Chara aspera var. subinermis Kützing

Type locality: "Chiwa: Chanka, in stagnis 17.III.1873 (Korollkow et Krause!)" [Uzbekistan, Khiva] (Migula 1904: 538). Lectotype (designated by Romanov 2022: 1): Kolokow & Krause; 17 viii 1873; LE A0001549 (Romanov 2022: 1).
