Type species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Lithothamnion is Lithothamnion muelleri Lenormand ex Rosanoff.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Clathromorphum testaceum (Foslie) Foslie
Type information
Type locality: Bergsfjord, Finnmark, Norway (Woelkerling 1998: 363). Holotype: collector not indicated [probably M. Foslie]; 2.viii.1891; ‘klph. springfl. ebbe [= rock pools spring ebb tide]’. TRH C21-3527, includes slide 219 and one unnumbered slide (Woelkerling & al. 2005: 497). Notes: Isotypes: PC, Foslie no. 19, Thuret-Bornet Herbarium (algal fascicle 132, filed undes Clathromorphum testaceum; BM, algal box collection 423.
Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), light-brown; brick-coloured (Neal 1993).
