Type species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Aegagropila is Aegagropila linnaei Kützing.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Aegagropila brownii (Dillwyn) Kützing

Adjective (Latin), resembling a moss (Neal 1993).
