The type species (lectotype) of the genus Phormidium is Phormidium lucidum Kützing ex Gomont.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Microcoleus fonticola (Kirchner) Strunecky, Komárek & J.R.Johansen

Type locality: an einem steinernen Bassin in Pola in Istrien March 1835 (INA 1996).

Nomenclatural notes
The name was not validated by Gomont (1892: 191), as claimed by various authors; Gomont merely listed it under "species inquirendae". The entity was later valdiated by Kirchner (1880: 197) as Lyngbya fonticola, q.v. - (31 Mar 2014) - M.D. Guiry
