Type species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Gyrodinium is Gyrodinium spirale (Bergh) Kofoid & Swezy.

This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Type information
Type locality: "Kattegat (57° 16' N, 11° 39' E). The sample was collected by Yu. B. Okolodkov on 10 July 1993" (Okolodkov 1997: 101).
