Type species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Phormidium is Phormidium lucidum Kützing ex Gomont.
Status of name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Microcoleus autumnalis (Gomont) Strunecky, Komárek & J.R.Johansen
Type information
Type locality: "In nuda terra autumno" (Oscillatoria autumnalis C. Agardh) (INA 1996).
Origin of species name

No synonyms are currently included in AlgaeBase.
Nomenclatural notes
This name is listed as Phormidium autumnale Trevisan ex Gomont 1892 by Strunecky et al. (2013: 1176) but Gomont (1892:187-189) does not attribute the name to Trevisan. - (21 Feb 2014) - M.D. Guiry
INA notes: "Gomont (1892) treated Phormidium vulgare as a synonym of P. autumnalis, so M. vulgaris cannot be based on a Gomont name. Microcoleus vulgaris must be lectotypified with a specimen not nomenclaturally entangled with P. autumnale." - (22 Apr 2014) - M.D. Guiry
New name: later starting- point basionym (INA). - (21 Aug 2014) - G.M. Guiry
Taxonomic notes
It exists also Phormidium autumnale (C. Agardh) Trevisan 1844, Alg. Udin. 20, with Basionym Oscillatoria autumnalis C. Agardh 1822. - (21 Sep 2024) - Salvador Valenzuela Miranda
General environment
This is a freshwater/terrestrial species.
